OVO through the eyes of Jason Limon

The Cirque du Soleil show selected for Houston’s trio of artists – Shag, Jason Limon and El Mac – is OVO. Last week, we posted our interview with El Mac about his original artwork. This week, we focus on Texas-based artist Jason Limon.

With a musical backdrop inspired by Brazilian styles, OVO is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects’ home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.

Jason Limon’s a Texas native, a lifelong resident of San Antonio. Following a dozen years in the field of graphic design, in 2007, Limon redirected his career towards fulltime painting and illustration. His works blend together organic, engaging animal life with blocky containers and objects — electrical plugs are a fondly revisited device — to vividly evoke strange yet somehow familiar fragments of dreams. Given his skill and imagination, it’s no wonder Limon has earned awards and salutes from Communication Arts, American Illustration, Graphist Design Annual and more.
