Even if you aren’t familiar with Zar’s eerie oil paintings, you’ve likely seen his work if you’ve watched films like Darkman, Hellboy, the Planet of the Apes remake or the American version of The Ring (the latter in particular bears his distinctive stamp) Carefully sculpting morbid monstrosities and crafting vivid make-up effects primarily for horror films, Zar leapt into the film industry while still in high school, with a career in full swing a year after graduation. The love affair didn’t last, though — the pettiness, politics and creative conflicts of the cinema business didn’t sit well with Zar. Following the advice of his friend, author and artist Clive Barker (no stranger to the headaches of Hollywood), Zar turned his focus to his own art endeavours.
